This core pc specifies that internists are flexible and versatile specialists in their work because they can find solutions to problems in different scenarios or settings, depending on where the patient is (outpatient, hospital). This is why they have pc s that allow them to care for patients with medical problems of a diverse complexity and that, in turn, must be solved at different speeds. These problems range from emergencies (in the emergency word or icu ) to care for chronic diseases (programs for education and monitoring, external consultation, home care).

In addition, they have opportunities to work in administrative positions in health and education entities, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry. This diversity of settings was described by the interviewees.

rp 002 stated that “the internist is precisely the person who coordinates health care in the hospital and who coordinates health care in the ambulatory part”. dp 004 expressed this idea in a richer way: “the internist works with the most elementary problems to the most complicated, but also in the hospital and ambulatory settings […] Also, from the point of view of the health system, internists and pediatricians have specialties that are good investments for the system because they can solve most problems for people instead of patients going from subspecialist to subspecialist and […] a good internist saves the Health Promoting Entities and the systems an amazing amount of money, we all know that”.

Furthermore, the variety of scenarios in which this professional can work can become even greater, since internists are in charge of the coordination of academic programs, departments of internal medicine, and other services in health and educational entities:

The way I see it, an internist in emergencies is very important, an internist in intensive care […] in the leadership of internist programs they are important, in the care for everyday patients, they are also important in ambulatory care […] in primary care or prevention. I mean, they have a really important role in many areas ( dp 002).
